Illinois residents are starting to see some substantial differences in their electricity rates, due to deregulation. Constellation Energy, a lead electricity provider, has moved into the competitive market by offering service and lower electricity rates to approximately 1.5 million Illinois residents.

This alternative energy provider has been offering service in Illinois for years by offering lower electricity rates to businesses and organizations after deregulation first began in the 1990s. Now residential customers are able to get the lower electricity rates as well, with the market being opened due to deregulation.

Constellation Energy is planning to offer service plans of either one or two years that will feature fixed electricity rates. These rates are a 22% discount over Ameren’s rates and 18% discount over ComEd’s electricity rates, at the present time. This is a very substantial decrease in electricity rates for residential customers that are due to the competitive energy market that has opened up for Illinois residential customers.

Kenny Matula, senior vice president of Constellation Energy’s residential markets, said, “More than 200,000 Illinois residents have already experienced lower rates and price certainty by choosing an alternative electricity supplier, and we hope our latest offer will encourage more Illinois consumers to take advantage of potential savings on their electricity bills.”

Energy deregulation for Illinois residents means big changes in their electricity rates. In fact, PlugInIllinois reports that electricity providers have seen more than 260,000 residents switch, which means considerable savings for them. Illinois electricity rates are seeing big changes and this means big changes for them financially.
